The Raccoon Den

4-5 Year Old Child - Monday, Wednesday & Friday 8:00AM to 11:00AM
Our Raccoon Den is an enrichment program for the four-year-old child and meets three days a week, 3 hours per day. This program is designed to help children progress in a variety of skills to prepare for kindergarten, to become socially aware and responsible for themselves and to create a love of learning. The Raccoon Den is designed as a learning setting structure but with 20 minutes of free play, 30-40 minutes circle time and 40-60 minutes table rotation time, which is where we do our language arts, math, science and art. We have a 20-30 minute time frame of a little outside play (weather permitting). Children participate in age-appropriate activities, such as unstructured hands-on play, group story time, themed activities and collaborate learning with peers.
When teaching the alphabet, phonics, numbers, handwriting, shapes & colors we use "Learning Without Tears", "Zoo-Phonics" & "All About Learning". These curriculums have proven to be successful as it grows with the child in each of our programs. The Raccoon Den is designed to be fun for the child while they are preparing for kindergarten. The Bear Den
Kindergarten ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
Our 3-day a week kindergarten enrichment program provides an opportunity for the kindergarten child to learn and practice social, emotional, problem-solving, and the skills to learn to study, which are skills your child will use throughout his/her educational journey. Our small 12:2 child/adult ratio provides a more intimate setting for the kindergarten age child. This enrichment program is structured so we have 45 minutes of language arts 2-3 times a week, and 45 minutes of math 2-3 times a week, with groups of 4:1 child/adult ratio, making each child a priority and meeting his/her needs in the program. We have science/social studies 2-4 times a month. Our focus in these enrichment programs is to build critical skills in reading and math's traditional benchmarks, without putting a lot of pressure on the child. We strive to create a love of learning environment.
We use the following curriculum...

* Language Arts/Geography/Art-
Children experience short lessons with living books, nature, art appreciation, and so much more. We use All About Reading program that is designed mainly for use with pre-k and kindergarten students, yet is very adaptable to fit a wide range of learning needs. Older students who are not yet reading and need to work on phonological awareness skills or other pre-reading skills also benefit from using this program. Children who have fine motor delays or speech issues can use the program as well. With All About Reading, your student will develop these five fundamental pre-reading skills:
-
Print Awareness
-
Phonological Awareness
-
Letter Knowledge
-
Listening Comprehension
-
Motivation to Read
We also use Explode the Code, Learning without Tears and Dash into Learning for writing and phonics.

* Math-
Kindergarten Math with Confidence! The carefully sequenced and confident-building lessons help the child develop a strong understanding of math, step by step. It’s playful, hands-on, and fun with thorough coverage of all the skills your child needs to become capable and confident at math.
· Reading, writing, and comparing numbers
· Beginning addition and subtraction
· Shapes, patterns, and directions
· Counting to 100
· Money, time and measurement

All About Math is a multi-sensory program that carefully builds children’s understanding of how our number system works. Using this program during table rotations makes for a fun time of games, but the students are learning.
* Science/Social Studies-
We take a unique approach to science/social studies with our fun cooking class enrichment. Celebrating different cultures & cuisines twice a month cooking in the kitchen! We explore different languages, geography, and traditions through cooking. For example, we roll our own sushi, make homemade teriyaki sauce, and learn to stir-fry while learning all about the country Japan!
We also use 180 Days of Science when not in the kitchen.
